Care for Real

Care for Real has been serving the far northside of Chicago for more than 50 years. Since its founding, Care for Real has been about neighbors helping neighbors and continues to evolve to address the community’s changing needs.

Established by the Rev'd William Johnson, Rabbi Herman Schaalman of Emmanuel Congregation, and other members of the Edgewater religious organizations responded to apartment fires along Kenmore and Winthrop avenues by helping clothe, house and feed those displaced. Originally a short-term solution, Care for Real has adapted to meet the changing needs of the community.

Care for Real partners with local businesses, faith communities, schools, elected officials, grocery partners, community groups, and neighbors to collect high-need items, volunteer their time, donate their resources, and serve as ambassadors of Care for Real to address the increased need for food assistance, clothing, referrals, and support.

In June 2019, Mother Erika Takacs and members of our parish gathered to bless the new Care for Real office on Sheridan Road. Executive director Lyle Allen thanked us for our long-term and generous support. Part of the day was a recognition of the contributions of our parish, Father William Johnson and Tom Kmiecik on their “Wall of Honor.”
